Our After School Program, provides homework assistance, tutoring and educationalal activities for children in kindergarten through 5th grade. Over 90% of our children speak English as their second language. Here at the LIFE Center the children improve their English skills, as English is spoken unless concepts need to be explained. Bi-lingual staff assist at all levels. Emphasis is places on good study habits, the development of social skills, a love of learning and fair play.
We work closely with the local school district and meet regularly with parents to ensure we are meeting the needs of the child and the family. The 'whole family' approach to our programs distiguishes us from other After School Programs and we often have extended familiy members enrolled. We are proud of the fact that our earliest LIFE Center 'graduates' are now in college and graduate school. Most are the first in their family to attend college.
The After School Program is divided into two phases at two program sites. The Beekman Avenue site houses the younger portion of our program, the children in Kindergarten through Third Grade. Instructors tutor the children in small groups to meet individual needs. They supervise homework and supplement school assignments with activities designed to improve math and English skills. Our Valley Street site is for Fourth, and Fifth graders. This area of the program has a strong academic focus. Staff provides support services to help them with homework assignments. They encourage the children, teach them solid study habits, and foster a love of learning and knowledge.
Each classroom is staffed with a lead teacher and enough assistant teachers to ensure a low staff-to-student ratio is maintained. Each grade group has at least one bi-lingual staff member to assist with dual language homework and to explain concepts when needed. All staff members meet security and education requirements according to position level. We are also committed to ongoing staff development and training.
